SUMMARY:SCI Academics Gain International Recognition at AIMBIG Oceania 2026
DESCRIPTION: Academics from Southern Cross Institute (SCI) presented their research work on the international stage at the AIMBIG Oceania 2026 Conference\, held at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) on 22–23 May 2026. \nRepresenting SCI were Dr Hom Nath Dhungana\, Dr Radhika Kuttala\, Dr Eric Howard\, and Associate Professor Anju Kalluvelil Janardhanan. The team presented their research paper\, “Who Decides Best? A Rapid Systematic Review of AI\, Human\, and Hybrid Decision-Making in Higher Education Admissions\,” which attracted strong interest and received highly positive feedback from conference delegates and reviewers. The research examines the evolving role of artificial intelligence in higher education admissions and contributes to important global discussions on how AI\, human expertise\, and hybrid approaches can support decision-making processes in universities. \nAnother highlight of the conference was the keynote presentation delivered by Dr Hom Nath Dhungana on “The Hidden Cost of AI: Balancing Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence in the Future of Society”. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to research and innovation\, Dr Dhungana was honoured with the prestigious Global Excellence Award. \nThe achievements of the SCI team reflect the Institute’s growing research profile and its commitment to advancing innovation\, knowledge creation\, and international collaboration in higher education. \nSCI congratulates Dr Dhungana\, Dr Kuttala\, Dr Howard\, and Associate Professor Janardhanan on their outstanding accomplishments and looks forward to their continued contributions to impactful research and academic excellence.

DESCRIPTION:Southern Cross Institute (SCI) is proud to celebrate the successful participation of Assoc Prof Anju Kalluvelil Janardhanan\, Deputy Dean\, at the HERDSA 2026 Annual Conference\, held at the National University of Singapore. \nAssoc Prof Janardhanan facilitated a highly engaging roundtable titled “Staff Capability in the GenAI Era: What Do Academics Actually Need to Learn?”\, bringing together higher education professionals from across the world to explore one of the most pressing questions facing the sector as generative artificial intelligence continues to reshape teaching\, learning\, and assessment. \nDesigned and led by Assoc Prof Janardhanan\, the interactive roundtable encouraged participants to reflect on three key questions: \n\nWhat do academics need to LEARN?\nWhat do academics need to UNLEARN?\nWhat do academics need to BECOME?\n\nThe session attracted enthusiastic participation from academics\, educational leaders and learning and teaching professionals representing institutions across the higher education sector. \nThe ideas shared during the roundtable will inform SCI’s ongoing professional development initiatives for academic staff\, reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to strengthening learning\, teaching and assessment practices in the GenAI era. \nAssoc Prof Janardhanan’s successful facilitation of this conference session reflects both her leadership in learning and teaching and SCI’s commitment to contributing to national and international conversations on educational innovation. Her work continues to position SCI as an institution that actively shares knowledge\, embraces emerging technologies\, and supports educators in responding confidently to the changing landscape of higher education. \nSCI congratulates Assoc Prof Anju Kalluvelil Janardhanan on this significant achievement. SUMMARY:Professional Learning Session on AI-Integrated Assessment Lifecycle in Open Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Southern Cross Institute (SCI) recently delivered a professional learning session on the AI-Integrated Assessment Lifecycle for Open Assessments for academic staff\, facilitated by Assoc Prof Anju Kalluvelil Janardhanan\, Deputy Dean\, as part of the Institute’s strategic response to the evolving role of Generative AI (GenAI) in higher education. \nDeveloped and led by Assoc Prof Janardhanan\, the session introduced the updated AI-Integrated Assessment Lifecycle for Open Assessments—a five-stage model that guides the appropriate\, purposeful\, and ethical use of GenAI throughout the assessment lifecycle. The model supports educators from assessment design and student guidance through to marking\, feedback\, moderation\, and continuous quality improvement. Rather than viewing academic integrity solely as a submission compliance issue\, the framework embeds responsible AI use throughout assessment design\, implementation\, and evaluation\, enabling authentic learning while promoting fair\, transparent\, and consistent assessment practices. \nThe session equipped academic staff with practical strategies to implement the updated five-stage model\, design authentic open assessments that appropriately incorporate GenAI\, apply consistent and transparent marking and feedback practices across disciplines\, and continuously enhance assessment quality through evidence-informed\, student-centred approaches. \nRecognising that assessment quality is strengthened through collaborative reflection\, Assoc Prof Janardhanan also facilitated a collegial discussion during which academic staff shared their experiences of marking and providing feedback in SCI’s open assessments. These discussions identified current strengths\, surfaced common challenges\, and generated practical recommendations for improving consistency\, transparency\, and the overall quality of assessment and feedback practices across the Institute. \nBy translating contemporary scholarship and institutional experience into practical guidance for educators\, the session strengthened assessment capability across SCI and fostered a shared understanding of responsible GenAI integration in assessment. The initiative demonstrates Assoc Prof Janardhanan’s educational leadership in leading institution-wide assessment enhancement\, building colleagues’ assessment capability\, and supporting the development of authentic\, future-focused learning in an AI-enabled higher education environment.
